Layton's Story

Three-year-old Layton Schmitz lives in Monticello with his parents and six-year-old brother, Logan.  Layton has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.

A Miracle Baby

During a routine ultrasound 18 weeks into the pregnancy, Layton's parents were told that their baby's kidneys were not functioning. They were not producing amniotic fluid and he would not survive past birth.

Deciding against termination of their pregnancy, the next months were spent at countless doctor appointments having many ultrasounds.  Layton's amniotic fluid level fluctuated from almost none to the low side of normal, creating a glimmer of hope.

Almost a month before his due date, the doctors determined the amniotic fluid level was too low to wait any longer and induced birth.  Layton was born on  August 4, 2004, against all odds and against most doctors' speculations.  His parents and brother were relieved, overjoyed and exceedingly anxious to meet him!

Surviving birth was just the beginning of Layton's journey.  Within the first 48 hours Layton had emergency surgery.  A stint was placed from his kidney out his left side in order for him to urinate.  Two days later another surgery was performed and he was placed on peritoneal dialysis, which was discontinued after only one week due to complications.  After a two-month hospital stay and even more surgeries, he could finally go home.

The Long Road Ahead

Layton is a rambunctious, talkative, precocious little boy.  He loves doing all the things little boys his age like to do, playing with cars and trucks, following his big brother around and reading books.

However, Layton, at three years of age weighs only 27 pounds. He has numerous daily medications and receives injections twice a week. Because of his depressed immune system, Layton is not always able to participate in large social settings.

As Layton's kidney function continues to diminish, it is apparent that transplant time is near. Layton's father is being tested as a possible donor.

An estimated $50,000 is being raised by friends, family and volunteers in the community.
